The Office of Native Hawaiian Relations (ONHR), formally established by Congress in 2004, discharges responsibilities related to the Native Hawaiian people and assists with the Department’s activities in Hawaiʻi.

ONHR’s mission is to serve as a liaison with the Native Hawaiian Community—and the Department and its bureaus and offices—on issues affecting Hawaiʻi. ONHR also seeks to fulfill the U.S. Government’s responsibilities to effectuate and implement the special political and legal relationship between the United States and the Native Hawaiian Community, and continue the process of reconciliation with the Native Hawaiian people.
